The time has come for Manilla Road to break out of the underground bubble and get to the level where they can get some wider acclaim to all of the hard work that’s been put forth all of these years. Four songs Mark sings on, five by Hellroadie the song Mysterium is sung by Mark, which makes it equal time since it’s eleven minutes long. Why would you choose to open an album on such a bum, uninteresting note? Mark’s guitars sound RAW and lethal, Josh’s bass lines are solid, and Mark and Hellroadie share vocal duties equally here. This is an introspective manilla road mysterium personal album from group leader Mark Manilla. The result is…well, it sounds like Manilla Road, but a fuller. One would never know what to expect on MR’s long epic tracks msyterium you almost know when the tempo change and when the guitar solos are coming. Although there is also an instrumental, it’s more or less an interlude and doesn’t do much for the album one way or another, so I’m going to ignore it here.
One of the only saving graces here is that the last 3 songs are seriously some of the best Manilla Road has ever put out. These four abominations make the first three songs seem like the greatest Manilla Road you’ve ever heard.

I remember listening to post-reunion stuff like Spiral Castle and Gates of Fire as well, but I don’t remember liking them all that much since I must not have listened to them more than once apiece. I bring this up because one of the things I hear in defense of this record is that “Well they’ve always been like this”, as if that manilla road mysterium invalidates any negative comments that could be made about it because they haven’t changed.

I don’t even know where to start. One marries it and grows to appreciate it and to see the flaws and age in a wabi-sabi way, as things that enhance the beauty of the whole. I swear, it’s the return of Randy Foxe 2. But overall it shows the band has aged really damn well. It’s been a long time but I also remember liking The Delugemanilla road mysterium because it was heavier and had a manilla road mysterium influence that was manolla on Crystal Logic. I don’t know what exactly I was expecting out of Mysterium.
But the MVP of the album is new drummer Neudi!!!
